Start with the room you have. Grow when the market earns it.
Start with the room and equipment you have. Prove the programming. Grow into a home station. Take a public space only when the audience and revenue justify it. This guide is the whole ladder — what each rung contains, how we onboard, and the rules that keep a new affiliate out of trouble.
The Four Entry Paths
PICK THE RUNG| Path | Best for | What it operates | Planning allowance* |
|---|---|---|---|
| Presenter Desk | DJ or program host | One scheduled live show | $175–$400 |
| Home Affiliate Station | Local station operator | Full local programming and live broadcasts | $600–$1,500 |
| Community Studio | Team with local activity and revenue | Public-facing station, guests, sales and events | $2,500–$7,500 |
| Professional Connection | Existing station or studio | Existing professional system connected to U-ROCK® | $0–$500 |
*Equipment planning ranges, reusing a suitable computer where possible. Rent, deposits, insurance and commercial Internet are separate.
1 · Presenter Desk
ONE SHOW, PROVENThis is for someone carrying a scheduled show — not operating the complete affiliate station. The right entry point for DJs, specialty-show hosts, interviewers and music people who want to prove their program before running a whole station.
Equipment- Existing reliable computer
- Dynamic USB/XLR microphone
- Wired, closed-back headphones
- Desk stand or boom arm
- Windscreen or pop filter
- Wired Ethernet connection
- Approved live encoder
- Local recording enabled as a safety copy
2 · Home Affiliate Station
THE OPERATING POSITIONA spare bedroom, basement room or home office becomes a serious broadcast space. The room does not need to look expensive. It needs to work reliably.
Equipment- Dedicated Windows broadcast computer
- SAM Broadcaster Pro
- Second monitor
- Two dynamic XLR microphones
- USB mixer or two-input interface
- Two pairs of wired headphones
- Four-output headphone amplifier
- Mic arms, XLR cables and labeled wiring
- UPS battery backup
- Wired broadband
- Phone hotspot / secondary emergency connection
- Curtains, rug, bookshelves or basic acoustic panels
3 · Community Studio
WHEN THE MARKET EARNS ITBuild the same dependable audio core, then add:
- Three or four microphone positions
- Four-input USB mixer or broadcast console
- Guest table
- Presenter and guest headphone distribution
- Dedicated broadcast workstation
- Separate administration/content computer
- Locked equipment and storage area
- UPS for computer, mixer, router and modem
- Dedicated business Internet
- Backup Internet path
- Basic acoustic treatment
- Exterior and interior station signage
- Secure cable routing
- Equipment and liability insurance
A community studio can support live local programming, artist and community interviews, multiple presenters and guests, sponsor meetings and advertising production, local event coverage, training for new presenters, and a visible U-ROCK® presence in the market.
4 · Professional Connection
KEEP WHAT WORKSAn established broadcaster does not throw out its console, automation or workflow to join the network. We test the existing output, configure the connection and bring the station into the network without rebuilding a functioning studio. Our Melbourne affiliate went live exactly this way — its own professional equipment through the U-ROCK® connection.
The Onboarding Loop
10 STEPS · NO SKIPPINGPresenter, home affiliate, community studio or professional connection.
Computer, microphones, mixer, interface, headphones, cables, furniture and Internet. We buy nothing until this is complete.
Noise, echo, ventilation, electrical outlets, router location, and whether the operator can close a door during broadcasts.
Wired Ethernet, extended connection test — not one flattering speed-test screenshot.
A new affiliate does not automatically need a processor, patch bay, rack or expensive console.
Configure SAM or the approved professional encoder, metadata, and the assigned U-ROCK® connection.
Mic level, background noise, music balance, metadata, local recording, and reconnection after an intentional disconnect.
Opening, music, microphone breaks, station identification, emergency exit and handoff.
Controlled live hours and a dependable weekly schedule.
Fix weak audio, unreliable scheduling or operator problems before expanding.
